The Throggs Neck BID welcomes a great new addition to our community: Empower Rehab, located at 2895 Roosevelt Avenue. The organization provides occupational and physical therapy in a friendly, welcoming environment. Led by Thomas Polykarpous and Pierce Arroyo, they can be reached at 718-233-8293, and at empowerotpt@gmail.com. The Throggs Neck BID has spent a great deal of time, money and effort beautifying our community. A key part of that endeavor was the development of tree pits with plants and mulch.
Unfortunately, we have observed some individuals placing bikes, scooters, and trash in these sites. To those who do so: Please be kind to your neighborhood. Stop defacing these wonderful sites.
A Gala Celebration
It’s time to celebrate! A Gala Ball is being planned to allow local business and property owners, along with the members of the public, to share a night of great food and drink, convivial company, and general merriment.
There is much to celebrate. The Throggs Neck BID began operations at the most tumultuous and challenging time in memory, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York and the rest of the world hard.
Even as most of the rest of the city, including much of city government, retreated to their homes, Throggs Neck BID staff reported each day to work, and went door-to- door to district businesses handing out face masks, sanitizers, and more. Sanitation and security companies were hired to supplement city services.
In the months that followed, unprecedented successes occurred. The dangerous lack of lighting along East Tremont Avenue was addressed, and bright, new lights were emplaced. The commercial corridor was dramatically enhanced with new trees, new tree pits with plants, and decorative iron guards. Thousands of toys were distributed to local children. Working with a local institution, numerous food items were distributed. All this, and much more. As a result of all this, a number of new businesses have opened in our community.
On October 20, 2022, a gathering will take place at the Villa Barone Manor at 6pm. Please save the date, and watch this space for information on purchasing tickets, journal ads, etc.
We look forward to sharing a great evening with you!
Doing business in NYC is, under the best of conditions, difficult. The additional challenges from COVID made that task even more challenging.
Our community, however, is thriving and growing. Our existing enterprises largely survived, and a significant number of new businesses have opened since the worst of the pandemic ended. Food retailers, insurance companies, meeting venues, health care facilities, personal care and beauty businesses, educational facilities, and restaurants have opened their doors or are planning to do so in the near future.
We welcome all these new entrepreneurs, and will provide details about them in the coming weeks.
The Board of Directors and staff of the Throggs Neck BID wishes all a happy and meaningful Independence Day!
BID Opposes Up Zoning
The Throggs Neck Bid has provided the following testimony in opposition to the Up Zoning proposal
The Throggs Neck Business Improvement District is in complete opposition to the Up Zoning proposal threatening our community.
There are several reasons for this.
As evidenced by last year’s devastating flooding following Hurricane Ida, our local drainage infrastructure is already inadequate. Adding this massive and out of scale development would result in rapid and severe danger to the homes and businesses of our area.
The traffic in this neighborhood is already severe. Adding the significant number of people in the current proposal would render that issue even more troubling, causing a dramatic deterioration to our local quality of life. We remind all that no there is no subway service to this area, and bus service is already inadequate.
One of the most significant challenges to the business community throughout the Throggs Neck BID is parking. The proposed Up Zoning does not even remotely provide adequate parking for the influx of people it calls for. This would seriously harm both residents and enterprises throughout the area.
The Throggs Neck BID, Community Board 10, and the overwhelming majority of local residents oppose this proposal. The ruinous impact is clear. It is difficult to imagine any justification to allow it to go forward.
NOTE: The City Planning Commission has scheduled its public hearing for the Bruckner Sites Rezoning for Wednesday, June 29 at 10 A.M. It is a virtual public hearing via ZOOM. The meeting identification number is 618 237 7396. The password is 1. To dial-in, you may call (877) 853-5257 or (888) 788-0099. Please follow the website below on how to submit testimony. The meeting will also be livestreamed through the Department of City Planning Website: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nycengage/events/city-planning-commission-public-meeting/371025/1.
Unwanted Scooters
Despite the opposition of the Throggs Neck BID, the City has imposed its scooter program on our community. The BID was successful in delaying the project, leaving us the last neighborhood to be forced to endure this.
The Tree guard program has been completed! In addition, the spring planting has been accomplished, as well. Our community has never been so beautiful!
Fighting Graffiti
Our neighborhood is privileged to have dedicated residents who selflessly give their time to making this area one of the best in New York City. A sterling example is John Marano, who diligently eliminates graffiti, without seeking recompense or recognition. Seen in the picture above, John paints over graffiti scrawled over a local store. Thank you, John!
Restaurant Week
There can be little doubt that the Throggs Neck Bid features some of the best restaurants in the entire region. Just about every type of food is available, of the highest quality! While we always encourage everyone to patronize our comprehensive selection of delectable meals, a special time to do so is “NYC Restaurant Week,” July 18—August 21. As frequently noted in our weekly newsletter, the BID is seeking to compile a thorough list of menus, which we will publish on our social media and elsewhere as a guide for patrons throughout the area.
